So you want to purchase a dog or cat. There is something you should know before you take the leap. House pets are to be taken care of like your very own children; it is natural that they become part of the family. All animals have wants, needs and health issues just like human beings. You really have to be prepared because there are many things you need to care for your pets in order to keep them happy and healthy. In regards to pet health, you have to realize that it can be costly for veterinarian visits, so you may want to consider pet health insurance.

Health insurance for our pets is an option growing in attractiveness to many owners of our canine and feline friends, especially because most consider their pet a full-fledged family member. More policies have been sold in the last year and a half than in the last 20 years, with the average monthly cost being between $9 and $25.

Some newer policies cover regular check-ups and routine care. You may not consider this to be a benefit seeing that the routine care that is covered usually costs less than the insurance premiums. Economically, pet insurance that covers unexpected, expensive health care costs make better sense. You have to as yourself some pretty grave pet health questions. For instance, if you had to pay out of your own pocket, would you seek treatment of internal injuries from an accident? Would you pay for needed cancer treatment or treatment for other diseases? What if your dog has hip dysplasia? Odds are, your pet will never need such care, but if he does, you might welcome the coverage when faced with a $5,000 bill. Other pet health questions to ask: Would I be able to afford a sequence of treatments that might add up that high? Would I feel forced to euthanize my pet if I could not come up with the money to pay? To some it is not an option.

Once you have considered these questions it will help you decide if you are going to purchase pet insurance. Deciding to purchase a health insurance policy for your pet may not be an easy decision. In many cases, preexisting medical conditions are typically excluded from coverage. Many companies that sell the policies in the past have gone out of business leaving policyholders hanging. If you decide to purchase a policy, make sure you are familiar with the fine print explaining what is covered and what is not. Gather all the information you can before making a final decision. Also before purchasing a policy make sure it is accepted by your local veterinarian or veterinarians. Be sure to review what veterinary procedures and supplies are covered. Pet health policies are similar to human insurance policies; annual premiums, deductibles, and different coverage plans based on what the owner chooses. Plans are based on breeds, age, pre-existing conditions and in some cases, lifestyle of the pet (i.e. indoor vs. outdoor cat).

Most companies start policies at age 6-8 weeks, some have no age limit, and of the others I researched, one had a limit of 27 years, others had a limit of 8 years of age (if the animal was insured when less than 8 years, coverage would continue beyond 8 years). The current overall average for annual deductibles is around $100.00. The policy costs vary, depending on the animal and the different packages that owners can choose. Some packages are comprehensive, including such things as: annual checkups and vaccinations, routine care, preventive medications (like heartworm preventive supplements) and spay/neuter surgeries. Other plans cover only accident and illness. Most plans offer immediate coverage for accident claims, and 30 days for illness claims on new policies. Additional pets are usually covered at a reduced rate after the first policy-holding pet.

So you thought the hardest part to purchasing a pet was going to be choosing the one you would take home! Well now you know that being owning a pet has all the responsibilities of having a baby. It is important that people understand before becoming pet owners there is more to it than keeping their fur flea free, purchasing treats and pet products, like collars and toys and catering to the nutrition diet or diets of your puppies or kittens. There can be serious ramifications if you take pet ownership lightly.

Cat lovers are known to pamper their pets and you are probably no different. Your kitty has all the latest toys and comforts including self-cleaning litter box, a treat dispenser, cat grass, every cat toy known to the pet shop owner, and a variety of scratching posts but kitty wants to use the sofa instead.

Nothing you have done to try to deter her from scratching as worked and you are at your wits end. You have tried all the sprays and even the double sided tape that is supposed to scare her away due to the stickiness but all she does is walk over a little and continue to sharpen her claws on a different spot. So what are you to do? Does the concept of trimming your cat’s claws scare you to death? Let me show you how to make it easier.

First off, don’t try to rush the process of trimming your cat’s nails, all you will get out of that is a ticked off cat and lots of bites and scratches! Take the time to let her get used to having her claws touched and rubbed. You should do this often and not just went you want to cut her nails, if not the cat will associate the touching with getting her nails cut and you do not want that. Do a little research on the technique so that you are comfortable with it. You probably know that there is a blood vessel that runs in the claws that not only hurts if nicked, but will also bleed badly. A wound in that area is highly susceptible to infection as well due to her digging in the bacteria filled litter box.

Before you begin to actually do the clipping, make sure that you have all the things you think you will need. Of course, the most important part of your tool kit will be the clippers. You need a good quality pair that are only for the cat. Get some guillotine style surgical steel clippers from a pet specialty store and try to get some that have an extra blade. Practice a little with them before the live event so that you are comfortable using them.

Next you need a large towel to wrap your cat in case she doesn’t chill out and calm down. This way you can keep her wrapped up and work on one paw at a time. You may need to draft a friend or roommate into helping you if you have particularly unruly kitty. Finally, you want to be sure that you have a good light source so that you can see the blood vessel in the claw and avoid cutting it. It is best to leave them a little long than to cut them to the quick.

I am not giving you a guarantee that following my advice will make you successful in getting your cat’s claws trimmed, if you have one of those arrogant kitties that have a mind of their own it may take you several tries over a period of days to get them all trimmed. Just remember, there is no law that says you have to get them all done in one sitting, if you get one done that’s a step in the right direction. If you insist on trying to cut the claws and your cat is freaking out she will run from you the next time she sees you with the clippers.

Train Your Dog To Exercise Indoors

19 Aug 2008 In: Pet, dog

Exercise is as important for your pet as it is for you and every dog should get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Just like with humans, exercise has health benefits for your dog such as conditioning his muscles, helping his heart stay healthy and even helping him have a positive attitude.

But with the hectic schedules that most people have today, it can be difficult to fit in 30 minutes each day to devote to exercising your dog. While it would be nice to kill 2 birds with one stone and take your pooch out for a walk, thus providing exercise for both you and him, this may not be practical timewise or weatherwise.

Luckily there is an answer - pet treadmills. These are similar to human treadmills and have a rotating floor that encourages your animal to keep with a pre-set pace. It is on a smaller scale from a ?people? treadmill and has straps that keep your pet within the bounds of the treadmill.

To use the pet treadmill, you simply strap your pet in so he cannot stray from the platform then turn it on. As the floor moves, your pet will start walking to keep up with it. This may take a bit of getting used to for your dog, but with a little training and positive reinforcement your pet will soon learn to love it. I recommend, you start slow and gradually speed up the treadmill once your dog gets used to it.

These pet treadmills can give your dog the exercise he needs when you cannot. They can simulate the same feelings your dog has when he plays or runs outside. Their great for people who physically cannot exercise their dog or for those bitter cold winter days when it?s not fit for man nor beast outdoors. Even if your dog is older and doesn?t have a lot of energy, you can simply put the treadmill on a slow speed. Younger dogs with energy to burn can get theirs set to a fast speed and there?s even a timer so you can make sure your pet gets his a veterinarian-recommended amount of exercise.

Having a pet treadmill is a great addition to your pets exercise routine but it?s no excuse to never take your dog outside. Dogs love to get out and smell the different smells and see some different scenery. They are much happier when they get to walk and play outside regularly. Come to think of it, you?ll be much happier too if you schedule some regular outdoor time for you and your dog.

But an pet treadmill can be a boon to busy pet owners and many use the exercise machines on the weekdays when they can?t fit in time to walk the dog. On the weekends, there is more free time, so they can take their pet for a walk in the park and let him run free or play frisbee. You might even look for a doggy park or playground where there is a fenced off area where your pet can run and play with other like minded dogs.

Training your dog to use a treadmill to get his daily dose of exercise indoors isn?t hard. After a few times, you?ll probably notice that your pet even looks forward to it!

My Needs Are Simple And Few!

19 Aug 2008 In: Pet, dog

My dear owner,

Thank you once again for giving me shelter. (Lick, slurp, lick, slurp) Aside from food, shelter and love, my needs are simple and few! Since I am dependent upon you to provide for me, we should discuss my basic needs. I can lend you the canine insight that you may lack as a human, particularly if I am your first canine companion pet.

Of course, I require a steady supply of food and fresh water, and while I long for the same quality of culinary delight that you routinely enjoy, I know that’s an unrealistic expectation. As long as you feed me something that’s nutritionally suited for my species, I’ll happily devour whatever little morsels of people food you throw my way. I’m not particularly fond of that stuff that comes from the tap, but it’ll do in a pinch. I draw the line at drinking from toilets.

Splish splash

In addition to my regular veterinary care, I’ll need a flea and tick collar at a bare minimum. How would you like those critters crawling all over you? Please help me to prevent them from crawling on me.

If you want to show me off for company, how about you pick up some grooming aids so I can look my sexy best? I SO look forward to weekly shampoos. Who needs rubber duckies when you get to splash at humans at bath time? I understand that humans multitask, and I love those massages with the grooming gloves, so we could watch TV together while you give my coat a nightly massage. I cannot vacuum after myself (but maybe you could suggest that as an advanced course at obedience school), so you might want to pick up some of those hair pickup tools for yourself.

A bowl of my very own

I could use a doggie bowl or two, something simple, yet elegant, perhaps something with my name on it. It’s not that I mind sharing your everyday bowls, but it would be nice to have something that’s all mine when it comes to feeding and watering troughs. I’ll need one for food and one for water, and an everyday pattern will suffice?no need for an expensive china pattern.

Collars and other jewelry

I look forward to our walks together, but it’s just too tempting for me to stray when you walk me without a leash. I think the government suits must be on to us doggies, since they’ve enacted those pesky leash laws everywhere. So, if you want to continue spending this quality time with me, you’ll need to find a leash that fits me properly, is strong enough to hold me, and is the proper length. If it’s too long, I’ll trip all over myself, but if it’s not long enough, I won’t have the room I need to roam. I know that there is a dizzying array of leashes available, but please use a little discretion and choose one with the right look for my breed so that all the other doggies don’t make fun of me. They can be so darn cruel!

Creature comforts

I was told that most humans have jobs, so I understand that you’ll be spending time away from me. If you could see your way clear to leaving a few creature comforts behind, it would really help. First, I don’t want to hog your people furniture?it’s too big for me anyway. I could use one of those nice, comfy doggie beds. Floors are meant to be walked on, not lounged upon. I know that there are a number of places that I should not go when you’re gone, so spray that indoor repellent, and I’ll learn the first time. I’m a quick study?something about Pavlov!

Dogs in toyland

Toys will help me pass the time, assist me in my development, and most importantly, distract me from the fact that you’re not here. I could have some REAL fun if you’d get me my very own cat, but I realize that is not likely. Here is a list of things that I would really, really enjoy if you cannot get me my own cat:

- A nice supply of those rubber, chewy thingies

- Squishy, squeaky, talking toys

- Rawhide chews, dental chews, anything that I will mistake for a bone

- Treats, treats, and more treats ? a never-ending supply of treats

Special occasion gifts

You humans have your porches, your patios and your tree houses. I would give my doggie eye teeth for my very own dog house. You could have Santa deliver it in time for the holidays, or you save it for a birthday treat. Either way, it’ll give me my own little hideaway and protect me from the elements, should you take temporary leave of your human senses and leave me outside while you run one of your many errands. If you can’t swing the canine estate just yet, maybe we could negotiate a doggie door?

Above all, I require the same devotion and attention that you expect from me. Treat me right, and I’ll be your best friend for life.

Love and kisses,

Your beloved doggie

Dogs are a fantastic edition to any family but like all youngsters they need training. If you do not train your puppy now it will take a serious amount of help from a training school to get him to be obedient later on. Puppies just like babies learn mostly in their early years and unfortunately will also pick up the bad habits also. Early attention will save you heartache later on and give you more quality time.

House Training:

Dogs has to go to the toilet, everybody has experienced a new puppy making a mess on the tiles or carpet, not a pleasant experience but one that allows you begin training. You should allow your dog out on regular intervals; he will learn that this is the time to go to the toilet. If he happens to go in the house let him know that this is wrong by using a familiar word such as ?No? and put him in the yard for a few minutes. Do not hit your dog, by doing so you will only break his spirit and make him nervous of you and others. It can by very frustrating at times but words work better long term and hitting. Never ever put the dogs nose into his urine, so many people do this thinking it is a good way for the dog to learn his lesson but in actual fact all you are doing is burning the animals nose, this is equally as bad as hitting.

Furniture and your puppy:

Teething can be a bit of a nightmare but you can eliminate the damage caused by puppies to furniture in a number of different ways. Boredom is a common cause for dogs to get up to mischief. Make yourself available for about 20 minutes playtime per day (excluding walking). Playing ball in the yard is a great exercise for the dog and apart from exercise it bonds you and him together. Toys are ideal in the house and will occupy the dog, if there are no toys such as a chewy bone the dog will find other ways especially if you pop down for some shopping and leave him alone ? the furniture will get it. Different types of sprays are available to spray on the furniture and can be very effective. Remember to change the toys around from time to time as the dog will become bored with the same toys month in month out.

Walking:

Starting your puppy on a lead can be comical. It will take some time for them to get used to being on the leash but once they do it will be no problem. A dog will try to pull you along as this is in their nature. Do not run with the dog as this is giving in and they will expect this all the time. Put the dog on a short leash (not to short) and it will discourage them from trying to dictate the pace. After a week or so both you and the dog will be at ease with one another on the walk. Remember to bring the doggy bag with you. Starting off expect the dog to be curious of other dogs and new surroundings. Do not drag him along on the lead as this is his time for enjoyment.

Feeding:

Your dog has a different intestinal setup to you. So many people feed their dogs the same type of food as they eat themselves along with the dog food. Obesity in animals is common place along with humans. Do not feed your dog chocolate or other sweet foods as this will only lead to bowl problems. Dog food is designed to give the dog all the nutrients he will need to live healthily. Dog treats are available; they do not need our junk food. Check with your local vet or seek advice online for the amount of food your dog should consume on a daily basis.

Dog Treats:

Dog treats should be used as an incentive for obedience. Training a dog can be hard work and patients are needed. Basic training such as the command to sit should be rewarded with a dog treat. The dog will begin to understand that this is a good behaviour move and will do it less reluctantly with time.

Remember dogs will obey you more lovingly if treated properly without hitting; simple words will work much better than smacking. Make time for your dog, leaving a dog out the back yard day and night is no life, do not get a dog into the house under pressure from children, it has to be a well thought out decision.

The winter season is soon to be upon us, and what a time it is for pets and dogs especially to be covering themselves in all forms of dirt and grime from outside of the home. For the dog, it is a time for fun and games romping around in muddy wet fields, rolling in every corner of dirt possible, but for you the owner it can be fun to watch, but very annoying and stressful, when it is time to take your dog back home, and clean itself up, before it decides to run riot when it gets back, and leave paw prints all over your cream carpets and furniture.

Keeping your dog clean at this time of year is essential. To keep on top of this your dog needs regular grooming on their coat, this should have been taught to you at dog training level, and hopefully you will have listened if you went to train your dog, and will have picked up lots of good god cleaning habits as well as good training techniques.

Regularly give your dog a good brush which can be purchased from any pet store when you are purchasing your monthly pet supplies. Remove any loose hairs, which do not want a place on your best living room carpet. Help stimulate the dogs skin as well with brushing, and you will find your dog loves it, and it can be great fun for the two of you. If your dog id long haired or short haired, at this time of year you must check that the hair around the paws is all trimmed down. This is to help prevent mud and dirt attaching to the paws as easy, helping the cleaning process after walks become a lot easier. Whilst cleaning you should always try and inspect their ears, making sure they are clean with no changes from your last look, and regularly maintain your dogs toenails. Lastly while you are checking around the ears, give the teeth a good clean, and make sure they are all looking healthy.

A great piece of advice in the winter season, and in fact any season that is muddy is once you have taken your dog for a walk, always have a tray of water before you bring your dog back inside so you can stand the dog in it and rinse off the paws of all the dirt and mud. If you have more than one dog, then this process will be great fun and a real test of your other dogs obedience. If your dog is like mine then it will want to roll around in everything, therefore a good wash down with the garden hose is your best bet, and if you have an outside dog house for him, then even better still.

Always make sure after you have rinsed your dog off, you give them a good rub down, as in this weather all of us are prone to getting run down and getting colds, and imagine how you would feel if you was drenched with a cold hose in minus zero degrees, and then left to stand and dry I can imagine not very happy, and would no doubt be ill over the next few days. Therefore treat your dog as you would like to be treated.

Chinchillas, like all rodents, need to chew. It keeps your teeth short and healthy since they dont stop growing. There is a variety of material, shapes and flavors of things for them to chew on. Switching it up from time to time and giving your pet a variety of chew toys can make it a little more fun for them. I have noticed that through past experiences with rodent pets of both myself and friends, and with my current chinchilla, they enjoy both soft and hard things to chew.

My chinchilla will chew anything. This is important to note if you ever let your own chinchilla or rodent out of his/her cage to have some fun. You have to be careful of the environment they are in. My chinchilla has chewed through two electric wires. She has chewed on numerous furniture, books, and paper. Its not that I dont watch her when shes out, its that shes so fast and just gets to things quicker than I can at times.

When shes not running through the house for her next quick snack, she is sitting in her cage chewing on a variety of things I try to provide her with. The first, which is probably the staple thing for rodents to chew on as pets, is toilet paper and paper towel rolls. These are great. Not only do you get to put what would usually be trash to good use, they are somewhat soft and easy for the rodent to chew. Sometimes they prefer this over the harder things, though you have to make sure there isnt a lot of glue on them.

She also loves to chew wood. The constant piece she has is a wooden ledge in her cage, though she doesnt chew that as much. She likes to jump on it and stuff, but only chews it when she really doesnt have anything else to chew. Its a nice thing to have in the cage for moments between her old and new chew toy.

I also get her wood blocks that she just loves. They are little, finger length, and usually come in many assorted colors. Some even are flavored. Im not really sure if she enjoys the flavored ones more or not, but she loves all the wood chew toys. They are her favorite, a treat almost, and she will chew on that contently for a long time. I like to keep one of those, since its a harder toy, and a roll, since its a softer toy, in her cage at the same time. This gives her variety for when she wants to chew.

Of course, anything in her cage she will chew. She has a green plastic igloo for a house, and that is covered in bite marks. She usually only chews that when she is antsy and wants to get out of the cage. Its a good sign to let me know she might be feeling too cooped up. I noticed that some, maybe even more, will start to chew these constant items in their cages when they are bored.

They also will chew their cages for the same reason. My chinchilla is no different. She will chew that when she has ran out of a good chew toy and gets bored, or when she wants out of the cage. I can tell because she is most active when I let her out after she has been chewing on the cage.

Animals are smarter than most people give them credit and a wonderful friend to have. We should treat them better by providing variety for their life. We need to not just show them love and affection with hugs and petting, but also show them that we care by providing them with enjoyable items we give them. Take note of what they prefer, what they often chew, and what gets chewed the fastest. Rodents are one of the most affectionate pets surprisingly, always amusing and entertaining, and deserve every little treat and toy they can get.

Pet Supply More Than Food Bowls

13 Aug 2008 In: Pet, Pet Supplies

Your pet supply may consist of a variety of items for a variety of pets. There are many different kinds of pets, and they all have unique needs and personalities. You may have more than one kind of pet, or unusual pets. Then you have an even bigger array of pet supply items.

The basics in pet supply needs are pretty obvious. No matter what kind of pet you have, you have to meet its basic needs. You have to have feed, and something to feed and water your pet out of. For dogs and cats, this chore has been made easier by pet supply manufacturers. You can now purchase large canisters with bowls attached to the bottoms. It is the same principal that made silos work, but on a smaller scale. But it cuts the work down for you so that you dont have to feed as often.

There are many places that you can get all of your pet supply needs. There are even stores that are dedicated solely to this purpose. These are great places to get items that you never even knew you needed. You know those things that youve never heard of, but once you see them you buy them.

Farm supply stores can be a great place for your pet supply needs. Because these stores are usually based on wholesaling, they are often cheaper than other places. The downside is that you may have to buy larger quantities than you intended. But if you plan on keeping your pet, it may be worth it in the long run.

Online auction sites can be great places to buy some pet supply needs. For those items that you dont have to buy over and over and are higher priced items, this is a great way to get a bargain. As with other items on auction sites, these items may be a great deal if not many people bid on them. One thing that you need to remember is to check shipping prices. It may seem like a great deal until you add in shipping. Find all costs before buying.

Some of your pet supply needs can be found at any of your general retailers. Food, dishes, shampoos, and toys are a few of many items to be found. One thing that you need to make sure you buy with dogs or cats is a collar. Make sure that you keep current tags on your pets. These are your best chance for recovering a lost pet, and therefore one of the most important things on your pet supply list.
